Cristobal WAS in the old Canal Zone--which ceased to exost in 1977 as a result of the 77 Treaties.

The city of COLON (columbus) is the major city on the Atlantic side. It is the city of my wife's birth and where she grew up with her 3 sisters and 1 brother. It was , when I was stationed there. 90 % black and mostly slums.   This  is a slum of Colon.

On Atlantic Coast. Atlantic coast North of Colon was undeveloped in 1965 and I think it still is. However, Panama is constructing a bridge over the Canal which will hurry development along this coast. I suspect. Atlantic Side has always been ignored --whereas the Pacific side has gotten more attention due to Panama City and the Inter-American Highway.
INTER-AMERICAN HIGHWAY. Idea was to be able to drive from TX to Argentina. it is complete except for the "Darien" Area South of Panama City--this section stretches to the border with Colombia and when I was in Panama they were trying to figure out how to build on it as it is mostly swamp. However, with all the "dope" comiing out of Colombia, I understand the effort was stopped. Panama has "border" border problems with Colombia.
SANTA iSABEL WAS A SMALL COMMUNITY inhabited by Panamanian "Indians."
From SALUD--last of the trip up North coast.
Photo of the GATUN LOCKS and Lake. This is the old lock--they now have new locks on each side that can handle the huge ships. Most of the canal is routed thru GATUN LAKE, which is an artificial lake that we constructed when we built the Canal. At the time of its building it was the largest man-made lake in the world. Panama is now having a problem keeping the lake full--drought conditions. Each transit via the old locks takes 52 million gallons of fresh water that is not recovered.
Photos were taken on a trip to EL VALLE (the Valley) which is a resort town on Pacific Side. It is in the highlands so it is COOL (as opposed to the old Canal Zone which is hot and humid.)
