FORT DeRUSSY AND ARMY MUSEUM
TODAY'S FORT DeRUSSY IS A PARK THAT IS JUST EAST OF WAIKIKI BEACH. AT THE MAIN ENTRANCE THERE IS A MONUMENT WITH INFORMATION ABOUT SOME OF HAWAII'S MILITARY UNITS AND THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM THAT WAS COMPRISED OF NISEI (FIRST GENERATION JAPANESE) WITH JUST A FEW WHITE OFFICERS AND NCO'S. THE MAIN ENTRANCE IS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE FORT. THERE IS ALSO A ENTRANCE ON THE SOUTHEAST SIDE OF THE FORT.
THE ARMY MUSEUM IS JUST NORTH EAST OF THE MAIN ENTRANCE AND THE ARMY CHAPEL IS JUST SOUTH EAST OF IT.

THE ARMY MUSEUM AT FORT DeRUSSY
FORT DeRUSSY WAS NAMED FOR GENERAL RENE EDWARD DeRUSSY. 22 FEBRUARY 1789 TO 23 NOVEMBER 1865 IN 1812, RENE E. DeRUSSY GRADUATED FROM THE U.S. MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT AS A SECOND LIEUTENANT IN THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS. GALLANT CONDUCT DURING THE BATTLE OF PLATTSBURG, WAR OF 1812, RESULTED IN A PROMOTION TO CAPTAIN FROM 1833 UNTIL 1838, MAJOR DeRUSSY PRESIDE OVER WEST POINT AS SUPERINTENDENT AND EVENTUALLY ROSE TO THE GRADE OF BRIGADIER GENERAL AND CHIEF OF ENGINEERS. WHILE SERVING AS SUPERINTENDING ENGINEER OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FORTIFICATIONS OF SAN FRANCISCO HARBOR HE DIED, BRINGING TO AN END 58 YEARS OF ACTIVE SERVICE TO THIS COUNTRY. DeRUSSY INVENTED THE BARBETTE DEPRESSING GUN CARRIAGE, WHICH MADE POSSIBLE THE NEXT GENERATION OF BIG DISAPPEARING GUNS OF THE TYPE EMPLACED IN BATTERY RANDOLPH.
